Sven Marx, a German cycling “ambassador” and well-known advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities, will be passing through Ottawa on Friday, May 4 on his 50,000 km bike trip around the world.
Cycling around the world
Sven, a 50-year-old survivor of two life-threatening illnesses that have physically impaired him for life (a tumor in his brain stem and skin cancer), has been cycling around the planet since April 23, 2017.The tour began with a large celebration at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate in the presence of the Commissioner for the Disabled of the Federal Republic of Germany Verena Bentele.
Inclusion needs action
Sven is a project sponsor for “Inklusion braucht Aktion” (Inclusion Needs Action), a German organization whose goal is to raise awareness of the topic of inclusion for the disabled population. While traveling, Marx hosts regular lectures about disability and his adventures on the road.
Advocacy, not for profit groups and officials
In attendance will be German Ambassador Sabine Sparwasser and other officials from the embassy; Senator Nancy Greene Raine, Canadian Athlete of the 20th Century; representatives of the federal All Party Cycling Caucus; City Councillor David Chernushenko, Chair, Environment and Climate Protection Committee; EnviroCentre, Vélo Canada Bikes and Bike Ottawa. We have also received a confirmation from Catherine McKenna that she will join.
Tentative schedule: drinks and snacks
It is not uncommon to have a beer for breakfast I have noticed during my many visits in Germany, but don’t count on a stein at this event. Here is the schedule.
Very brief, informal welcome addresses from 8 am to 8:15 am in front of the German embassy (order of speakers TBD)
Bike ride from 8:15 am to 8:45 am (departing at German embassy, crossing over to Ottawa U, cycling south along the Rideau Canal, crossing Pretoria Bridge, and cycling back to our embassy)
8:45 am to 9 am: time to socialize (drinks and snacks provided). The Bike to Work month info cart will be present as well.
Join the German embassy to welcome Sven. Be in time, the Germans are pünktlich. No dillydallying. Register for free here.
