A weekend in rural Quebec

March 15, 2018 Hansonthebike 0

Reading Time: 4 minutesLast weekend we visited a friend’s cottage near Chèneville, roughly 60 km north of Montebello. We took the quiet back roads from Buckingham via Mayo to stop in a small ski area near Ripon, the Parc des Montagnes Noires. It is not a big area, but there are a few kilometers of cross country ski trails with a few small huts. In 2015 a new building was added, the Chalet Stephane Richer, named after the Montreal Canadiens hockey forward. The chalet is not exactly a cozy chalet made of hand hewn logs, Hudson Bay blankets and a roaring fire. It [Read more…]

Empty stores, despite tons of free parking. Mmm, is lack of parking not the reason for disappearing businesses after all?

Cycling from Gracefield to Messines, Quebec: the paved railway track to the butcher

January 17, 2018 Hansonthebike 3

Reading Time: 5 minutesNothing beats the winterblues than sunny summer pictures. After my last two posts on bike modal shares in Ottawa based on the Statscan census, we are going to take a look at a paved path near Gracefield in rural Quebec. This fall, we went out for a bike ride a bit further away from Ottawa at a place called Gracefield in Quebec. It required a considerable drive, about 100 km north of Ottawa. We used to visit a cottage at Lac Pemichangan at Thirty One Mile Lake, but since the owners passed away and the cottage was sold, we don’t [Read more…]

Photo Essay: A Hike in Gatineau Park

October 12, 2017 Hansonthebike 3

Reading Time: 3 minutesI thought of it too late. I should have brought a camera to add a whole bunch of photos to Mapillary so that you can check out the paths in Gatineau Park from photos. This Thanksgiving weekend, Karen and I walked the Blanchet Trail, better known as the Wolf Trail in Gatineau Park, just north of Ottawa in Quebec Province. Here are photos of our 9 kilometer walk (2:30h), off Meech Lake, Quebec on October 8. The colours just started to change. It was warm, around 20 degrees and quite humid so we went early, around 9:30 am. On the [Read more…]

7 Gorgeous Bike and Pedestrian Bridges in the Netherlands

July 11, 2017 Hansonthebike 3

Reading Time: 6 minutesNetherlands’ cities have been building some fantastic bike infrastructure in the last decade. Bridges that look more than just a utilitarian crossing over a river or road. Cities don’t always chose the cheapest option per se, to great chagrin of some, but don’t underestimate the effects of beautiful design.

Travelling in Sicily: Part 5 – Catania’s Treasures

June 15, 2017 Hansonthebike 2

Reading Time: 8 minutesWe arrived in Catania and we left from Catania. On our way to Catania, we made a bit of a detour through some of the most depressing country side I have seen. Add to that the garbage and it makes you realise that Italy is not always that dream place we know from the images. In order not to bother with a car in a city where we were going to walk anyway, we dropped off the car at the Catania airport where we rented it, and took a bus in town to spend the two last days in Catania. [Read more…]

Travelling in Sicily: part 4 – Valley of the Temples & Siracusa

June 13, 2017 Hansonthebike 1

Reading Time: 8 minutesAfter visiting the north coast of Sicily, we crossed the island towards the next destination: the famous Valley of the Temples on the south shore. The route follows valleys and passes west of the Madonie mountains on highways that are often elevated on a series of pillars. It seems to be a bit of overkill and it definitely doesn’t improve the landscape; the concrete and construction companies must have had a field day, week, year, decade. Interestingly, some of the roads are in pretty bad shape but not much is really being done to repair roads. The road owner closes a lane [Read more…]

Every Italian home has a coffee maker. And so did our AirBnB locations.

Travelling in Sicily: part 3 – Castelbuono, Madonie & Cefalú

May 28, 2017 Hansonthebike 3

Reading Time: 7 minutesAfter a good night sleep at our second AirBnB location, we spent some time checking out Castelbuono. This town doesn’t get the attention it deserves as it is a nice base for some hiking in the Madonie mountains as well as a location to soak up some of the interior of Sicily. Yet another place with a long history, it is one of the places that is lively enough to spend a few days. It has a lovely old square, a number of tiny groceries stores, restaurants, butchers and bakeries, but unlike for example Cefalú, it isn’t much focussed on [Read more…]

Travelling in Sicily: part 2 – Museo Archeologico, Villa Romana del Casale & Morgantina

May 25, 2017 Hansonthebike 3

Reading Time: 5 minutes  Ragusa’s museum After five days in Sicily’s Ragusa, it was time to move on. But not before we checked out a tiny path running through a ravine near the old town. The path itself is not very well used but we found it on OpenStreetMaps. It also is not long and it passes some more caves and former graves. Youth was hanging out there and we had a little chat with some of the kids. While the path continues further we went up and emerged at the top near the Archeological museum. The museum is worth a visit, but very old fashioned [Read more…]

Travelling in Sicily: part 1 – the south east World Heritage sites

May 23, 2017 Hansonthebike 4

Reading Time: 9 minutesKaren and I prefer to go on holidays outside the high season. Why not when nothing ties you to the school holidays? Our preferred month is April, when Ottawa tends to be pretty dreadful, with temperatures around the freezing point, rainy, windy, some wet snow and this year even flooding. But the choices are limited. Yes we could go to Chili or South Africa, but the less we can fly, the better. Plus, I’d like to see my family in the Netherlands once a year, so the options (I am not complaining) are limited to Southern Europe, particularly Southern Spain, [Read more…]
